Our Family

Work in progress...

August 2001: Gil and I first met during a high school orientation. He was new to our school; we had a few classes together and were in the same group of friends. I still remember the first time I got the nerve to talk to him; it was during a fire drill one morning. After that we talked regularly and slowly got to know each other and become friends.

November 2001: Gil asked be out during a late night movie. We had gone with a group of friends but we were the only two who stayed for the second movie. It was a semi first date in a way. I had a feeling he was going to ask me out so I didn't really watch any of the movie. In perfect Gil fashion though he waited until the very end of the movie to finally ask me out.

September 2003: We both headed off to college.  Gil to Harvard and I headed to Western Carolina University.  We had a long distance relationship our freshman year until I transferred to UMASS for the remaining three years of college.  It was still long distance but now only 2 hours rather than several states away from one another.

November 2007: Gil proposed after graduating from OCS (officer candidate school for the marines.) We went for a walk through the woods on base in Quantico,VA and stopped at a look-out point, where Gil got down on one knee and proposed. I of course said yes and was happy that our families were all there to celebrate with us. we had an impromptu engagement dinner with our families before we all traveled back home.

July 26, 2008: We were married in a beautiful outdoor wedding in my parents backyard. I couldn't have dreamt a more perfect day. Our friends and family came from all over to celebrate with us. Gil was in the middle of TBS (the basic school for the marines) so he didn't arrive until the day of our rehearsal dinner and I drove him back to the airport the morning (5am!) after our wedding. It was a beautiful day that we will never forget. After the wedding I moved to VA to be with Gil while he finished his training.

September 2008: We moved to Hawaii and had a semi-honeymoon sightseeing around our new home.  We spent the rest of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 settling into life.  Gil also began training for his first deployment.

May-August 2009: Gil left for his first deployment to Afghanistan I traveled all across the country visiting friends and family for graduations and weddings. Shortly after arriving back in Hawaii after visiting family my parents flew out for their first of many visits to the island. The rest of the summer I stayed busy with friends and waited around for phone calls from Gil.  The summer ended with my brother's wedding and a small family reunion.

(One of the VERY few photos I have from his deployment)

November 2009: Gil's first deployment finally came to an end!  YAY!

December 2009: The whole family (both sides) came out to celebrate Christmas with us and welcome Gil home from his first deployment.

January 2010: We found out we were expecting our first bundle of joy, due in September.

February- August 2010: Gil began training for his next deployment.  I spent my days growing a baby, preparing to move to a new house down the street and shopping for a new car last minute due to ours dying.

September 21, 2010: We welcomed our daughter Aubrie Ann Desroches into our family via C-section.

September 21 - October 30, 2010: We enjoyed the next six weeks together as a family as we prepared for Gil to deploy for a second time.  We also celebrated some of the major holidays Gil would be missing during our Merry-Hallo-Thanks-Birth-Mas.  We pulled it all together in one day of celebrations.  We had carved pumpkins, had Thanksgiving for dinner, cupcakes to celebrate his birthday and presents and decorations for Christmas.  On the 30th of October we dropped Gil off around 1 am and said goodbye for the next 7 months.
